Darren Coates has 2 TDs as Southern takes Bayou Classic over Grambling
NEW ORLEANS - Darren Coates scored a rushing touchdown and caught a touchdown pass as Southern defeated Grambling, 22-13, in the 34th Bayou Classic on Saturday afternoon in the Superdome.
Darren Coates rushed 107 yards on 20 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run - the game's first score. He also caught four passes for 46 yards, including a 10-yard scoring reception from Bryant Lee.
It was the first Bayou Classic since the death in April of former Grambling coach Eddie Robinson, one of the central figures in the Classic's creation. The Tigers have worn a jersey patch all season honoring Robinson, one of six people honored with a banner bearing their name in the Superdome.
Grambling (8-3, 8-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) plays Jackson State in the SWAC Championship on Dec. 15 in Birmingham, Ala.
Southern (8-3, 6-3) took a 14-7 first-quarter lead; the score didn't change until late in the third quarter.
The Jaguars' Joe Manning blocked a punt by Tim Manuel in the Grambling end zone. Brandon Green had a chance to recover the ball for a touchdown, but fumbled it out of the end zone for a safety, giving Southern a 16-7 lead with 1:32 left in the third quarter.
Manning capitalized on another mistake by Grambling's punt team in the fourth quarter. Manuel dropped a snap and Manning recovered the ball at the Tigers' 7. That set up Josh Duran's 23-yard field goal, giving the Jaguars a 19-7 lead with 8:18 left.
Grambling got within 19-13 on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Landers to Clyde Edwards with 5:29 remaining. Jarmaul George blocked the extra point.
Southern played third-and-2 at its 46 on the next possession when Darren Coates ran 32 yards to set up Duran's clinching 37-yard field goal with 1:19 remaining.
